Naming and Taming Overwhelm For Healthcare and Human Service Providers Sarri Gilman 9780989778749 Books
I am not a psychotherapist. I am not a health or human service provider. I was definitely not the intended audience for this book. But I can tell you that I am someone who has experienced profound overwhelm; I am exactly the kind of person you, as a psychotherapist or health or human service provider, might be working with. I had the privilege of working with Sarri Gilman at a time in my life when my mind was exhausted, when my lungs were deprived of oxygen, and when I was for all intents and purposes drowning from overwhelm. Today, I am a strong swimmer. And what I know from that experience is that everyone who seeks help deserves the kind of treatment that Sarri Gilman provided. What I also know is that not everyone receives that.I read this book not because I am in a profession that helps other humans, but because I am a human whose life has been profoundly changed by working with Sarri Gilman. I knew that this book would contain information about overwhelm that I could use to continue to grow; I knew that this book would allow me to look at overwhelm through a different lens. I was not disappointed. Reading this book was like looking into Sarri’s toolbox—one that had been filled with the wisdom that comes only after years of experience. As a non-professional, I found the writing very accessible. It was delivered with the generous and compassionate spirit that I’ve come to know as Sarri. But it is not just a book about treating clients who experience overwhelm, it has such broader applications. It addresses professional overwhelm, overwhelm in organizations, and overwhelm in communities. It also provides insight into the relationship between overwhelm and boundaries.
My hope is that every health and human service provider feels compelled to read this book. Every client who seeks help deserves the kind of treatment that Sarri provides. And if you are a non-professional who happens upon this book in your Amazon search, I encourage you to read it. There is so much to be learned from Sarri Gilman’s mentorship.
